Take a “selfie” to help the whales!

This Easter weekend actions will be taking place around the world to speak out for whales kept captive by SEA LIFE. A number of animal advocates will be staging peaceful demonstrations at SEA LIFE centres around the UK in order to shine a spotlight on the company’s continued cruel use of beluga whales in circus-style shows in its Shanghai Centre. If you cannot make an event in person, you can still make a valuable contribution to the campaign.

Merlin, whose wild-caught whales perform in daily circus shows, is given environmental award

It was announced in press yesterday that Merlin, the parent company of SEA LIFE aquariums, had been given an award for its “Community and Environmental Action” by a group of private investment companies. The move came as a surprise to campaigners, as the company has recently been exposed for the cruel exploitation of wild-caught beluga whales in its Shanghai centre. Director of Freedom for Animals, Liz Tyson, said:

“Those that have followed our recently-launched SEA LIES campaign might be surprised to hear that this commercial company, …

Is Merlin’s “re-branding” of cruel whale aquarium a cynical attempt to quash ongoing criticism?

Is Merlin’s “re-branding” of cruel whale aquarium a cynical attempt to quash ongoing criticism?

In a move which has been branded “astoundingly cynical” by campaigners, Merlin Entertainments/ SEA LIFE appear to have taken action to quash criticism over its continued exploitation of Beluga whales in circus-style shows in its Shanghai centre… by rebranding the offending aquarium. Despite making repeated and highly-publicised claims that SEA LIFE is opposed to cetacean captivity, the company was exposed by Freedom for Animals in recent weeks for its active exploitation of Beluga whales in shows three times a day in its Shanghai Centre. That is, until Merlin …

Evidence of SEA LIFE’s Beluga whale hypocrisy

Evidence of SEA LIFE’s Beluga whale hypocrisy

In October 2012 SEA LIFE aquariums went up against a consortium of US aquariums including one of its largest competitors, SeaWorld, in a very public battle. Freedom for Animals was delighted to receive support for the SEA LIES campaign from esteemed cetacean expert, Dr. Thomas White, author of “In Defense of Dolphins” and scientific advisor to the Wild Dolphin Project. Dr White had this to say about the continued exploitation of whales by UK-based company, Merlin Entertainments, parent company of SEA LIFE aquariums:

“Scientific progress invariably leads us to change our understanding of the world. In particular, science regularly reveals challenging ethical issues we’d been blind to. Such is the case with …

Merlin withdraws invitation to meet, whale exploitation continues

Merlin withdraws invitation to meet, whale exploitation continues

Following Merlin’s shocking statement that the company saw “no merit” in discussing concerns raised over its continued exploitation of whales in the Shanghai SEA LIFE centre, the company has now withdrawn an invitation extended to Freedom for Animals just days before the launch of the SEA LIES campaign to meet in person, saying it also sees “no merit” in discussing the serious issues raised face-to-face.

Upon receipt of Merlin’s initial letter to Freedom for Animals, stating that the company was “disappointed” by the SEA LIES campaign, …

Shock as Merlin response states that it sees “no merit” in addressing whale concerns

This morning, Freedom for Animals received a letter from Merlin Entertainments/SEA LIFE in response to our new SEA LIES campaign, which was launched over the weekend. We were extremely disappointed by the response and felt it important to respond.

The below letter has therefore been sent to Merlin today, and can be viewed in PDF form HERE.

Is SEA LIFE beginning to bow to pressure?

Up until yesterday, several websites belonging to UK SEA LIFE centres claimed that, as well as being fundamentally opposed to the keeping of cetaceans (whales and dolphins) in captivity, the company was also actively campaigning for a ban on dolphinariums in Europe. Since Freedom for Animals exposed SEA LIFE’s secret cetacean circus in Shanghai on Friday, references to the SEA LIFE’s support for a ban have quietly been removed from all but one of the websites which previously proclaimed:

Various SEA LIFE websites claimed …
