Thank you: Beluga whales arrive safely at sea sanctuary

I can’t believe this day is finally with us.

Instead of our general news report on this, as Campaigns Director at FFA I wanted to write a personal letter to all of our supporters and to animal campaigners around the world.

The arrival of these whales at a sanctuary is not only is a fantastic victory for these whales, but also marks a historic day for anti-captivity worldwide. This achievement shows us that we can create a world where animals are free.

But firstly let’s …

Beluga whales start 6000 mile journey to sanctuary

Two beluga whales, Little White and
Little Grey, have today embarked on a 6000 mile journey from China to
Iceland. There, they will live out the rest of their days in a sanctuary
sea pen.

The whales have been released from a
life of daily performances for the public, at a UK owned aquarium based
in Shanghai, China. The centre is owned by Merlin Entertainments, the
owner of the SEA LIFE aquarium brand.

The whales will live in a bay, which measures 32,000 sq m …

BREAKING: CRUEL SHOWS FINALLY END FOR SEA LIFE WHALES

Two beluga whales, Little White and Little Grey, have been forced to perform tricks for crowds for the very last time. These two whales, and a deceased whale named Jun Jun, have been at the centre of a years-long campaign to end whale shows at the SEA LIFE owned aquarium in Shanghai, China.

In a historic victory for the campaign, the shows have now ended and the whales are due to be moved to the world’s first beluga sanctuary in April 2019.

Freedom for Animals have been …

UPDATE: Sea Life to rehome whales to sanctuary

Our campaign to free the three beluga whales in Shanghai has an end in sight.
The whales will finally be going to the long-promised sanctuary, which is located in Iceland, in Spring 2019.

At Freedom for Animals we have been calling for Sea Life, owned by attraction company Merlin Entertainments, to retire these whales since 2014 after we revealed that they were making the whales perform circus-style shows for crowds at their centre. We launched our SEA LIES campaign, highlighting how the company had tried to distance …

Get involved in our Week of Action for animals in aquariums!

14th – 20th August 2017

Aquatic animals like fish, octopus, crabs and turtles, are largely overlooked in wider campaigns on the zoo industry, however, they are just as deserving of our concern as other sentient beings.

In captivity, their life of the ocean becomes one lived in a tank. A sad existence, unable to swim the depths of the sea with others of their kind.

In our SEA LIES investigation into UK aquariums, we uncovered:

animals being taken directly …

Jun Jun the beluga whale dies under the care of Merlin Entertainments

It has been five long years since Merlin Entertainment bought Changfeng Ocean World in Shanghai. Five long years of daily ‘shows’ where Jun Jun and her two friends would perform unnatural tricks to entertain crowds at the ‘White Whale Theatre’. Back in 2014 we launched our campaign to encourage Merlin, parent company of SEA LIFE aquariums, to release the belugas to a sanctuary.

JunJun spent 10 years in captivity. At least now she is free from her prison. (Photo screenshot from OceanWorld website)

SEA LIFE Consumerise Animal Life Yet Again!

The AquaDom is located inside the Sea Life Center inside of a Radisson Blu hotel in Berlin, Germany…

Here, SEA LIFE continue to exploit and consumerise animal life, turning beauty into a commodity to be gawped at and pointed at under blazing artificial light. In the SEA LIFE reality, animal lives are used as hotel window dressing, as spectacle, whose value is to decorate like living wallpaper. It is an out-dated and grotesque feature of their commercial ambition: to turn every aquatic being into a living …

‘Emma the Vet’ and Thomas White, Ph.D. support the SEA LIES campaign

It’s always encouraging when experts and celebrities get involved in grassroots campaigns like SEA LIES, so we were very encouraged to receive support and good quotes pertaining to the plight of the belugas in Shanghai from Emma Milne aka ‘Emma the Vet’, a TV Vet and Author and from Thomas I. White, Ph.D. He is a Fellow of the Oxford Centre for Animals Ethics and Author of In Defense of Dolphins: The New Moral Frontier.

Please support the International Day of Action against Sea Life: End the Shows! Free the Belugas!

Merlin Entertainments continue to delay on ending the cruel shows and retiring these three beluga whales. As compassionate anti-captivity activists we must continue to take action until the daily circus-style shows stop. Are YOU free to help us raise awareness about the awful shows the 3 imprisoned belugas are still forced to endure?

Empty the Tanks annual international protest in June was a great success which saw Freedom for Animals protesters take to London, Manchester and Birmingham to highlight the plight of the belugas. September the 19th …
